The Department of Economics was established in the year 1975. Since inception, the department focused on emphasizing theoretical and methodological issues in economics. The mission of the department is providing quality education. The department offers well balanced courses for all the programs. The students of BA are getting admissions in the reputed institutes like University of Hyderabad, University of Pondicherry and other reputed institutes for PG courses.

Deviating from conventional programs, BA with Economics, Mathematics and Statistics was started in 1975 keeping in mind the importance of mathematical background for economists. In the same year B.Com (Gen) program was started. Later, the programs B.Com (TPP), B.Com (CA), B.Com (Hons.) A&F, BBA and BBA (Analytics) were started. Apart from regular curriculum, students of BA are trained in computer courses and SPSS package. Compulsory project and viva for 100 marks is made a part of curriculum for BA program. The department conducts various internal and external events to bring out the hidden talents of the students.

The department was led by eminent academicians like Sri A. Venkateswara Rao, former Vice-principal, Dr. N. Satyanarayana, former Principal and Sri V. Ramesh. Presently the Department is headed by Dr. M. Ramesh and Dr. Ch. Surya Prakasa Rao, Smt. Ch. V. Rohini Kusuma are other members. Sri A. Venkateswara Rao, former Vice-principal and HOD served the Department for more than 30 years.

Eminent economist, Dr. N. Satyanarayana, Former principal and HOD served the Department for more than 32 years and in total he had 37 years of teaching experience. He was the author of 36 books, course writer of UG & PG programmes for SCHOOL OF DISTANCE EDUCATION, ANDHRA UNIVERSITY, Dr. B.R. AMBEDKAR OPEN UNIVERSITY, HYDERABAD, Lesson writer for ALL INDIA RADIO, KU BAND VIDEO LESSONS, MANA T.V and noted columnist of leading telugu dailies like Andhra Jyothi, Andhra Bhoomi and Vartha. He was the author of 93 general articles, 500 career guidance articles and 35 consumer awareness articles.

Sri V Ramesh, former HOD, worked in the Department for 30 years. He was the author of text book Business Economics.
